HOW TO PREPARE FOR A HEADSHOT
How do you prepare for a headshot or portrait photoshoot?
When it comes to preparing for your headshot or portrait session, it’s always a good idea to think about how you want to present yourself. What image you want to portray.
THINK ABOUT YOUR “BRAND”
What is your “brand”? How do you want to present yourself to the world, your clients or that talent scout?
Before we get started, think carefully about your brand and how you want to be seen, so that we can get the perfect headshots for you. It would be really useful for me to know what words, ideas, concepts and colours you associate with your brand so I can shoot with this in mind.
DRESS WELL, NOT LOUDLY
Your clothes should compliment your face, not over shadow it. Bright colours are fine, and feel free to express yourself with your clothes. I often find a nicely pattern jacket or dress can look great in an image.
Bring multiple outifts, even if you don’t think we’ll use them and always bring at least one neutral coloured top - white, black, grey or beige works well.
Don’t go crazy with the jewellery, less is most definitely more here - but again, this might be part of your look, so it’s your choice at the end of the day!
If you are bringing a strapless dress, make sure to bring a strapless bra to go with it.
Be comfortably but confidently dressed - think about the image you want to portray.
HAIR AND MAKE UP
Your hair should be how you’d normally wear it, something that compliments your face shape and you’re confident with - don’t get a new cut the day before the shoot, let it grow in and get used to it. Make sure you bring your favoured hair product with you! We may need to tame some fly aways.
Make up is very personal, I would suggest wearing the minimal amount that makes you confident. I have some clients who love doing their own makeup and some who want a make up assistant - I can sort this out if this is you. The one thing I would suggest is to be careful with the foundation - if its not matched to your skin tone, it can really stand out in the photos.
Have a good night’s sleep before the shoot and try to avoid alcohol and salty foods a day or two before. They can tire your skin out.
MUSIC
I love music! So I always shoot while listening to some background tunes, but I’d love to hear your favourite music - and anything that makes you comfortable and relax.
